Composer’s Notes

messages between trees II for viola, recorder and bourdon is a version of the original composition for viola and bourdon. It was composed at the request of Dorothee Oberlinger and Nils Mönkemeyer, to whom the piece is also dedicated.

The composition is inspired by the dialogues between trees and aims to symbolize the communication in nature through this instrumentation. This piece is part of my compositions dedicated to nature. This series is both a reflection and an appeal for a mindful approach to nature, which has shown us the path of life together since time immemorial.

messages between trees II consists of a single 7-minute movement in which all rhythmic themes, intervals and times serve a specific dramaturgy. A dialogue between the two instruments and a sound atmosphere is created, as in a closed natural system: the information circles and each time it is repeated, a new aspect is exchanged.
This closed natural system is created between the trees, which never exist on their own – they communicate either underground via their roots or through the wind, no matter how far apart they are.
The bourdon is recorded before the performance and played from a tape or performed live by another string instrument or a string instrument group.
