Composer’s notes

The composition Polymnia was inspired by one of the nine Greek muses. She was the Goddess of music, the song and the dance. The five songs are moments of retrospection, miniatures, which briefly describe five different atmospheres. It was important to give an emotional impulse for these atmospheres. It would be possible to sing or dance the melodic or atmospheric elements of these five songs.

“Konstantia Gourzis Musik ist gerade deshalb so modern, weil sie den Mut hat, sich nicht ausschließlich in einer ‘modernen’ kakophonischen Tonsprache auszudrücken, und weil sie in ihren Kompositionen somit verschiedenen Einflüssen wie beispielsweise ethnologischen Elementen und packenden Grooves einen Platz einräumt. Erfreulicherweise schreckt Gourzi auch nicht vor Konsonanzen zurück – auch das ist ‘modern’. Deshalb bot sie ein Paradebeispiel der ‘Europäischen Wochen’ (…). Im Rahmen des Festivals dirigierte Gourzi bereits beim Eröffnungskonzert (…) die Brünner Philharmoniker mit Werken von Ligeti, Berlioz,­ Strawinsky und Strauss. Außerdem kam ihre von den ‘Europäischen Wochen’ in Auftrag gegebene Komposition ‘Polymnia’ für zwei Gitarren, Viola und Kontrabass am 30. Juni im Großen Redoutensaal (…) durch das Ensemble Mobile zur Aufführung.”
