Composer’s notes

Composing music for the anniversary festivities of the “Befreiungshalle” building naturally required some reflection on the reason for its setup. The war that it commemorates is not a reason for celebration. In fact, it makes me think about the people bearing misery, and the way that this war has influenced history. What has been considered “victory” 150 or 200 years ago, has been an ambivalent event for the people in Europe. Whatever powers gain the upper hand in any one period, can be interpreted or “celebrated” very differently tomorrow.

That said, die andere Seite is meant as a reflection about these changeable values and priorities. I wanted to use this opportunity to transform necessary thoughts and attitudes positively, and to center eine andere Seite (“another side”) of a historical event musically.

This piece was composed exclusively for the Befreiungshalle and the performance was based on the movement in this venue.

Press reviews
