Composer’s notes
Anájikon for string quartet is the first composition in a series of works for varying ensembles dedicated to angels. These angels, created by painters and sculptors who are close friends, inspired me to embark on this series, to give the angels sounds and portray them as musically alive. Each of the sound angels will receive a name that does not yet stand for anything already in existence.
The sculpture that inspired the sound-angel Anájikon is Alexander Polzin’s angel. The music is not attempting to interpret the sculpture. Instead the music stands very near to the “sounds” of the artwork and forms a new connection with it.
All three movements of Anájikon range in a similar harmonic mode. The composed motifs are very characteristic and define the piece without being overtaken by the harmonies or changes of chords. It is important to me to develop a new sound dramaturgy for string quartets without necessarily serving common contemporary sound patterns. Each of the movements could also stand on its own and they do not represent a traditional dramaturgic sequence. Each piece of the angel composition series follows this idea, mirrored in the title as “garden“.

“Laut- und klangmalerisch, mit pulsierendem Dauerton und Akkordverschiebungen im ersten Teil, einer elegischen Melodie in der Bratsche als ‘Blue Bird’ und flirrend verwobenen Glissandi in der Bratsche, chromatischen Tonverschiebungen über einem im Cello hin und her gestrichenen Dauerton im abschließenden ‘Blue Moon’ führte die Komposition die Zuhörer zur Blauen Stunde an einen zauberhaft entrückten Ort, dabei musikalisch Bezug nehmend auf eines der großen Motive der Bildenden Kunst, den ‘Hortus Conclusus’, in einer Abwandlung, nun nicht als Paradiesgarten der Jungfrau Maria, sondern als Verweilort eines einzelnen in seine Naturanschauung versunkenen Engels. Nur zögerlich löste sich nach den letzten Takten das Publikum aus seiner Verzauberung, und es gab großen Applaus für die Musiker und auch für Konstantia Gourzi.”
